Increasing sales teams' product knowledge via app

The Challenge

The importance of sales teams being knowledgeable about the vehicles they sell, particularly in this digital age where customers come armed with so much information themselves, is central to a successful car retailer.

But how to get that knowledge uplift is the challenge. While learning is already available in eLearning format, sales advisors need to sit at a desk, log into a learning platform, and complete their ‘lessons’ or look up information.

What the OEMs wanted was an app to run on any smartphone – iOS or Android – which gave all the information sales advisors and other retail staff needed at their fingers tips and in their pockets.

And more than just an information tool, the app needed to quiz, test and educate the sales advisors.

The Solution

Our app solution emerged from work we delivered for Toyota around the launch of the C-HR model. Here, we devised an app, called Explore C-HR, which created a buzz around the upcoming product launch, and after the event helped to embed the learning.

For our product app, we designed a CMS – content management system – into which all the necessary data is plugged which then populates an app on the user’s phone or tablet.

The app is controlled by the CMS system, which the team here at RTS Group can maintain, or our clients can maintain themselves, or both.

We incorporated a huge amount of information and features, including:

  • A live feed, with all the latest information about the products, along with alerts which will ping out when new details are added
  • Product information, broken down for each model
  • Key features
  • Information about potential competitors to each model
  • Jargon busters
  • Finance information

In short, the app takes everything anyone could possibly want to know about the client’s vehicles and condenses it.

Column One

Importantly, the app is a learning tool, which can be accredited depending on the client’s requirements. It has features where sales advisors can challenge their knowledge. And using AI, it looks at the answers and gears the questions towards potential gaps in the user’s knowledge.

The results can be tracked and collated, which will then help inform the client and drive changes in the learning programmes.

What’s more, the app can be in any language, to accommodate the global market.

The Result

The app has proved to be a very easy and speedy way of getting information into the pockets of sales teams. We can make changes on the CMS system and within seconds it’s updated the app.
For some clients, the app may replace an LMS, or learning management system; for others, the app can work alongside an LMS.

We currently have seven apps in use by our clients – including Toyota GB, Mazda UK, and Lexus Europe – all individually branded, themed and populated with their product information.
The platform offers a wide range of features, and our clients can cherry-pick to suit their requirements.

We developed this app to support product knowledge and retention in our network to ensure that we could provide an easy and engaging solution for all retailers. Our network love the interactivity and usage is very high.

“Working with RTS ensured that we delivered a brilliant solution to our network based on their needs. I would highly recommend RTS not only for their excellent client management, but also their technical ability to do everything in house while really understanding our goals and outcomes.”
